How to Obtain a CA BSIS Firearm Permit
In California, anyone in the security, alarm, or private investigation field that carries a firearm on duty must possess an exposed firearm permit issued by the California Department of Consumer Affairs. In order to apply for an exposed firearm permit, an applicant must adhere to the following criteria and must take the following steps:
STEP 1 - Take a 14-Hour CA BSIS Exposed Firearm Permit Course
This course covers the safe the carrying and use of firearms. This course consists of 8-hours of classroom instruction and 6-hours of gun range instruction
Step 2 - Pass a Written and Range Examination
Given at the end of the course (you must sucessfully pass the written exam AND you must qualify with EACH caliber of firearm you intend to carry on duty
Step 3 - Be a citizen of the United States of America OR have permanent legal alien status
The training facility where you take your exposed firearms class will require you to show proof of this before they will allow you to take the course
Step 4 - Submit a Firearm Permit Application to the California Department of Consumer Affairs - Bureau of Security and Investigative Services.
Pay the application fee (payable to the State of California)
Complete and submit the appropriate Live Scan Fingerprint form with the application
Complete and submit the Firearm Eligibility Form along with the applicable fee
