What is Live Scan Fingerprinting




Live Scan Fingerprinting is an automated digital fingerprinting system managed by the California Department of Justice


Live Scan fingerprinting is a way to search for an individual's criminal history background, which is most often used in the following situations:

- Undergo a criminal history check through the California Department of Justice (DOJ) AND the FBI (this is accomplished through the standard Live Scan Fingerprinting Process) -

- Complete the required California Guard Card Class Training Requirements

- Submit their comleted application to the State of California -

- As a Condition of Employment -

- For a License or Certification -

You can sumbit your application via mail or online. The State can take anywhere from 2 weeks to a few months to process your application and issue your California Guard Card. Included in your application packet will be 1. Your guard card application, 2. Your completed Live Scan Fingerprinting Form, 3. Your proof of completion of the Guard Card / Power to Arrest Training Class, 4. Your application fee ($50 if you mail it in, and $51 if you file it online.

In California, the California Department of Justice allows Law Enforcement Agencies and approximately 1500 approved private fingerprinting companies to condudct Live Scan Fingerprinting Services. Each person who actually takes the prints is required to undergo a background check with the department of justice and receive a Fingerprint Rolling Technician Certification. The fees you pay when you have your fingerprints taken range depending on the level of service that the requesting agency desires. The actual facility where your prints are taken only keep the rolling fee (usually $15=$30 per rolling) and the additional fees ($32 for the DOJ Service and $19 for the FBI service) get collected from the business each month by the DOJ & FBI.
